I’m reading another book by David Allen once a week during my lunch break these days. The book is entitled Ready for Anything. Each week I learn another technique to keep my head clear and remain productive. This week’s lesson is about clearing the decks and closing open loops.

Cleaning Up Creates New Direction

We wear many hats as small business owners; accountant, decision maker, salesperson and product creator. How can one manage it all? You need to be organized. I’ll repeat that…you need to be organized and remain so. Where do I begin? How about that pile of paper sitting on your desk? It doesn’t matter where you start, only that you take a step in “clearing the decks”. Once your desk is organized, shift your focus to the other pile of paper in your in-box. Each action energizes you to a state of effective responsiveness when something big that you weren’t expecting lands in your lap. For example, a large account is interested in your grooming shampoo. How are you going to fulfill orders if you’re unorganized and don’t even know if you have enough bottles for the shampoo? Now, I’m off to clean my own desk.

Prepare for the unexpected.
